FAQs
Purchasing a monument is a new process for most people. I hope these questions help you as you are beginning the process, and I hope you will reach out to me with any additional questions.
Are monuments, memorials, and headstones referring to the same thing?Edit
Yes, in general these terms are used interchangeably. There are many different styles of memorials and monuments. So, while headstones are traditionally referring to the larger, upright monuments at the "head" of the gravesite, a monument or memorial could be any style of upright, slant, or marker style stone.
How much does a headstone cost?
Monuments come in a variety of sizes, styles, and types, which makes the cost of a headstone difficult to estimate without knowing more specific details about your future monument. We welcome price inquiries for headstones in our inventory or, if you prefer a custom monument, we would be happy to discuss your project with you and offer a price quote.
As most people have either never gone through this process before, we are completely transparent with our pricing and will be sure you are made aware up front of material costs, labor costs, and installation costs.
Cemeteries sometimes have associated fees when you are adding a monument to a plot, so it's best to contact them as well while you are determining your overall monument budget.
Do all cemeteries have headstone size or headstone design restrictions?
Some cemeteries do have restrictions on size and design, while others do not. It is best to check with the cemetery where the monument will be installed. Most cemeteries have a sexton, manager, or company that manages the cemetery that can be reached for this information. If you need assistance making contact with your cemetery to get the necessary information, we can assist. Once we have determined your cemetery's regulations, we can typically make adjustments to accommodate any restrictions.
Do you do the engraving?
Engraving typically refers to the lettering that is added to the monument after a design is carved. We do offer engraving on our monuments and work with customers at the point of sale to determine what lettering will be added to the monument, ensure all spelling and dates are correct, and determine what will fit in the space available if any future lettering needs to be accounted for.
We are not equipped to engrave monuments on-site in the cemetery and we do not engrave on existing monuments purchased elsewhere. If you are in need of cemetery/on-site lettering, we would be happy to refer you to a company in your area.
How long does it take to carve a stone?
The amount of time it takes to produce a monument varies greatly due to several factors such as design and amount of detail involved. A simple design might take two or three days while an elaborate design might take months or in some cases over a year.
If you are hoping to have your monument completed and installed by a certain date, please let us know as early as possible so we can determine honestly if we are able to meet that goal.
Do you have designs to choose from?
Yes, we do have designs to choose from or, we can work with you to bring your own design to life to honor your loved one providing it is feasible. If you are hoping to bring in your own design, please provide us with photos and any materials that would be helpful to us to get your design developed.
Does your cost include installation? How far would you travel for installation?
Yes, we can include installation into the pricing. Each contract is unique and we will itemize your costs at the point of sale to show you installation costs transparently. Installation costs will very depending on distance, foundation size, and other installation variables.
We install monuments in most parts of New England and New York state. If you require installation in other parts of the country, we will ship anywhere in the United States and can possibly help to coordinate installation in your area.
Can a cemetery tell you who you have to use to purchase a monument from?
Some cemeteries may have established relationships with certain monument companies and may recommend their services. However, a cemetery cannot legally mandate where you purchase your monument. Customers have the freedom to find the monument company that best matches their values and what they are hoping to represent on their monument.
Can I prepare early and purchase a monument for my cemetery plot even if no one has passed away?
Absolutely. This is typically called purchasing a "pre-need" monument. This is a great way to design your own monument or to prepare your family's site before anyone has passed. After ensuring that your cemetery has no regulation against this, we would work with you to ensure that your monument has enough space for any lettering you plan to add in the future.
How do I clean my granite monument?
With regular care, granite monuments can continue to look brand new for years. Our recommendation for light soil (dirt, lichen and nature) would be to use a soft or medium-bristle nylon brush and scrub the granite monument with warm water and dish soap. No abrasives or steel brushes should ever be used on a granite monument.
Feel free to contact us for further recommendations, particularly if you are cleaning a material other than granite.
